Chapter 3

Following the Current

The watercourse way.

What Is the Current?

Sometimes one good event follows another. People become helpful, doors open, the body feels light. This is not coincidence but alignment: heart-qi (Chi) -circumstance briefly in tune. The current was always there; you stepped into it.

Why We Step Out

A small success arrives and the old habits return: worry, complaint, suspicion. The qi (Chi) tightens; the heart contracts; the current closes around someone else.

Daodejing 道德經
The highest good is like water: it benefits the ten thousand things (wanwu 萬物) without contending.
§8

The Boomerang of Inner State

The Neiye 內業 is direct: a settled heart attracts the Way; an agitated heart drives it off. Not metaphysics — physiology and attention.

Gratitude as Practice

If you despise your present circumstances, you remain tuned to dissatisfaction. Receive what is, value what supports you, and from that base move toward what you prefer. This is not resignation; it is changing the substrate.

Knowing What You Want

Most people know precisely what they do not want. Few can describe what they do want without negation. The Daodejing 道德經 §44: 'Know contentment, and you will not be disgraced; know when to stop, and you will not be in danger.' Direction grows out of contentment, not out of grievance.

Daodejing 道德經
Know contentment, and you will not be disgraced; know when to stop, and you will not be in danger; thus you may long endure.
§44

Tending Your Inputs

Be selective about what enters the heart. Constant alarm, gossip, and catastrophe shape the body's tone. The alchemist treats information as food.

The Optimist and the Pessimist

Two people in the same room inhabit different worlds because their qi (Chi) has tuned them to different frequencies of attention. They literally do not see the same things.

Neiye 內業
When the heart is at ease, the Way will settle of its own accord.
Trans. Rickett (adapted)

Setback as Test

When something goes wrong, notice the hook before reacting. Refuse automatic negativity. Look for what the moment is actually offering. Stay with the larger direction.

Ritual

Small rituals — bowing, lighting incense, sweeping — have no magic in themselves. Their function is to settle the heart and gather the qi (Chi) into a coherent state. The state is the work.

Comparing Daodejing 道德經 and Neiye 內業

Of the early chapters, this one is the most Daoist in spirit. The current resembles the Way itself — soft, low, inexhaustible. One does not master the current; one rides it. 'Knowing contentment, one is rich' is not a counsel of passivity but of clearance — removing the inner static that breaks the signal.

Core Lesson

Good fortune is sustained by gratitude, clarity, and non-grasping.

Gratitude Breathgan
5 min

The current is always running; complaint is what steps you out of it. Gratitude is not pretending things are good — it is the small act of tuning the heart back to what already supports you, so the watercourse way can carry you again. Three breaths, three noticings, and the substrate begins to change.

The highest good is like water: it benefits the ten thousand things without contending, and settles in the low places no one else wants. Know contentment, and you will not be disgraced.

Daodejing 道德經 §8 / §44

  1. 1Sit quietly. Place one hand on the chest, one on the lower belly. Take three slow breaths and let the shoulders drop.
  2. 2On the next inhale, bring to mind one ordinary thing you are glad of — not grand, just real: warm tea, a working body, someone who answered.
  3. 3On the exhale, let the gladness drop from the head into the chest, the way water finds its level. Do not perform it; just let it land.
  4. 4Repeat with three more small things. If complaint or 'yes but' arises, notice it without argument and return to the next small noticing.
  5. 5On the final exhale, feel the whole field of small supports holding you at once — bread, breath, ground, breath again.
  6. 6Sit one more breath. Notice the texture of the chest has loosened, and the current is closer than it was a minute ago.

Reflection

  • Which small thing surprised you with how much gratitude it carried — and what does that tell you about where the current is already meeting you?
  • Where did complaint or 'yes but' show up? Could you feel it tightening the qi (Chi) , pulling you out of the current?
  • If you let this be the substrate you move from today — not grievance, but quiet contentment — what one next step becomes obvious?

Gratitude is a quiet skill, not a mood. Each small noticing is a tiny rudder-turn back into the current that was holding you all along.

“Returning is the motion of the Way.”

— Daodejing 道德經 §40

Your quiet space for Daoist inward training

A reflection tool for you — not therapy or medical care.
